A devastating crash on the westbound 134 Freeway resulted in two fatalities, completely shutting down a significant stretch of the road on Sunday, January 5, 2025. The accident that involved a wrong-way driver was reported early Sunday morning at approximately 8:29 a.m., near the San Rafael Avenue off-ramp in Pasadena, west of the interchange with the 210 Freeway.

A spokesperson for the California Highway Patrol (CHP) confirmed the engagement of at least four distinct vehicles in the collision. The deceased individuals identities were not immediately available. In addition to the fatalities, City of Pasadena Public Information Officer Lisa Dederian reported that emergency medical services rushed three other individuals to local hospitals for further medical attention.

Scene footage, captured by KTLA photojournalist Phil Ige and Sofia Pop Perez, portrayed an array of severely damaged vehicles and all lanes of the roadway littered with debris. Notably, one of the involved vehicles faced the wrong direction, fostering the conclusion that this may have been the vehicle driving eastwards in the lanes designated for westbound traffic. However, further investigation is required to confirm this supposition.

The CHP spokesperson provided an update in the early afternoon, approximately five hours post-accident, confirming that the previously closed segment of the 134 Freeway had been cleared and reopened to traffic. The incident remains under investigation by the relevant authorities.
