A tragic incident occurred early Wednesday morning near the Orange County-Riverside County line, where three motorists were killed in a fiery crash on the 91 Freeway. The unfortunate event unfolded when a vehicle stalled around 1 a.m. in the eastbound lanes, just east of the 241 Toll Road.
Approximately five minutes post the vehicles stall, a second car crashed into its back, resulting in one of the vehicles catching fire. The report by the California Highway Patrol also mentioned the scattering of debris across the freeway lanes, which was later evident from the video that documented firefighters extinguishing the fire.
In addition to the two aforementioned cars, two other vehicles seemed to have been involved in the crash at some stage. As reported by OnScene.TV, a freelance media firm, multiple fatalities might have been caused by the collision but confirmation on the exact number was obtained later. According to a CHP spokesperson, three people lost their lives to this devastating incident, although further details about the victims or the vehicles they were in were not provided.
All eastbound lanes of the freeway were initially closed by officials who later opened a single lane temporarily. Subsequently, all lanes seemed to be closed again shortly after 4 a.m. The freeway was finally cleared around 6 a.m., but an unrelated crash on the westbound side of the freeway near Green River Road exacerbated traffic delays, particularly impacting commuters from the Corona area in Riverside County.
