On February 20, the Los Angeles Police Department reported that a suspect was apprehended following a police pursuit that resulted in a collision in Central Los Angeles. The suspect has been identified as 19-year-old Kwentin Monk.
LAPD Gang Enforcement Detail officers were assisting a burglary task force when they became involved in the pursuit of Monk, a possible burglary suspect. Monk attempted to evade the officers, speeding away to a Hancock Park neighborhood vicinity Oakwood Avenue and June Street. In an unexpected move, Monk turned his vehicle around in a cul-de-sac and accelerated towards the officers. This action prompted the officers to open fire on his vehicle.
Despite the gunfire, Monk was able to continue speeding away. The chase concluded when Monk collided with another vehicle at the intersection of Beverly Boulevard and Wilton Avenue in Larchmont. Monk tried to escape on foot post-crash but was swiftly apprehended.
The accident resulted in the other driver being transported to the hospital, fortunately suffering only minor injuries. Monk was not struck by any gunshot during the pursuit. No officers involved in the pursuit suffered injuries. Monk has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer. No additional information has been released at this time, as the incident is still under investigation.
