A fatal incident occurred on the 110 Freeway in downtown Los Angeles, leading to the temporary closure of all northbound lanes, during the rush hour on a Tuesday morning. The collision was reported just after 5 a.m. as per the California Highway Patrol, near the 3rd Street exit.
An aerial view from Sky5 showcased the serious nature of the event. Around 5:15 a.m., first responders were witnessed laying a sheet over a deceased individual in the far right lane of the freeway. A significantly damaged vehicle was noticed in the vicinity. The California Highway Patrol investigators, at the time, were not able to determine whether the deceased was a pedestrian who was hit, or an occupant of the vehicle involved in the accident.
The decedent, a man estimated to be around 50, located on the shoulder, was declared dead at the scene, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. Authorities advised that the backup on the northbound segment extended back as far as the 10 Freeway. Furthermore, KTLAs Rich Prickett, reporting from Sky5, indicated that the traffic jam extended to the 105 Freeway, a backup approximating 11 miles.
Eventually, one lane on the northbound 110 was reopened by 6:15 a.m. Observations revealed some congestion on the southbound section of the 110 as motorists slowed to look at the collision scene. By 7:30 a.m., all northbound lanes were fully operational again.
