Two teenagers, a 17-year-old male and an 18-year-old female, died and another 17-year-old male sustained serious injuries following a suspected DUI crash in Riverside, California on a Saturday morning. The incident happened when a Lexus sedan, driven by the now deceased 17-year-old, ran a red light on Wood Road, north of Van Buren Boulevard, as per Riverside Police reports.
The individual behind the wheel of the Lexus was speeding northbound on Wood Road at approximately 5:40 a.m. when they disobeyed the traffic signal at Van Buren Boulevard. Upon entering the intersection, their vehicle collided with a blue Scion car that was traveling east. The Scion was being driven by an adult male, who fortunately did not sustain injuries and remained present at the scene, actively cooperating with investigators.
Following the initial collision, the Lexus continued to propel north, hitting a cement light pole, a wooden electrical pole, and ultimately, a tree. The vehicle then came to a halt and caught fire. The two deceased teenagers were discovered within the fiery Lexus sedan while another 17-year-old male was found significantly injured and sent to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Riverside Police are withholding the identities of the deceased until family members have been appropriately notified. The police have noted alcohol, drugs, and driving at high speeds as potential contributing factors to the collision and have appealed for further information by contacting Traffic Detective Amanda Beeman.
