On Sunday, January 5, 2025, the westbound 134 Freeway was completely closed in the wake of a fatal accident triggered by a wrong-way driver. According to information given by a California Highway Patrol (CHP) spokesperson, the incident was initially reported at 8:29 a.m. This happened near the San Rafael Avenue off-ramp located in Pasadena, west of the corridor with the 210 Freeway.
The CHP spokesperson confirmed that a minimum of four vehicles were involved in the accident. Lisa Dederian, the Public Information Officer for the City of Pasadena, stated that the crash claimed the lives of two individuals. In addition, three more people were swiftly transported to nearby hospitals for emergency care.
Multiple severely damaged vehicles were showcased in footage recorded at the scene by KTLA, a local news station, with debris scattered over the entirety of the lanes. At least one of the wrecked vehicles was observed facing the incorrect direction on the freeway. At this time, its undetermined if this was the vehicle that initially headed eastbound within the westbound lanes.
