San Bernardino County Sheriff Shannon Dicus identified Hector Cuevas Jr., a six-year veteran of the department, as the deputy who tragically lost his life in a high-speed pursuit crash on Monday. The pursuit started following the disobedience of one Ryan Dwayne Turner Jr., 22, a San Bernardino resident who failed to yield in a stolen vehicle.
The exact cause of the critical crash remains unclear. However, it has been reported that Deputy Cuevas, 36, encountered another vehicle while driving at the intersection of El Evado and Seneca roads. The collision force was powerful, bisecting his patrol cruiser and damaging nearby power lines. A female in a small black sedan was also injured in the collision and was swiftly transported to the hospital. The extent of her condition is currently unknown.
Cuevas, who had given three years of service to the Sheriffs Victorville Station, unfortunately, died at the scene. Aerial photographs showed his body covered with an American flag as the medical examiner prepared to transport his remains. As a tribute to the fallen deputy, a motorcade and police cruisers surrounded the medical examiners vehicle, forming a procession while citizens of San Bernardino stood on the street.
Cuevas is survived by a wife, two children, his parents, sister, and brother. Turner, who reportedly has a previous record of fleeing and injuring a deputy, has currently been apprehended and is facing charges of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, and evading a police officer resulting in serious injury or death.
