18-year-old Arrested for Crashing into a Historic Fountain in Orange County

An 18-year-old driver was arrested after an accident involving a historic fountain in Orange County, California. This incident happened months after the same fountain was restored following a previous collision in 2023.

On November 24, the young driver, accompanied by a 17-year-old passenger was driving a black Honda CRV eastbound on Chapman Avenue in the city of Orange. The incident occurred just after midnight when the vehicle failed to slow down upon approaching the Plaza Park roundabout. Subsequently, the vehicle went over the curb and ended up striking several poles and a bench, ultimately crashing into the historic fountain at the center of the roundabout.

Reported security footage also collected at the scene suggested that the car was speeding down the road on a rainy night. The impact caused substantial front-end damage to the SUV. In addition, the broken bench and metal poles were fragmented across the plaza. The historics fountains edge tiles were also damaged during the impact.

Both the driver and his passenger suffered minor injuries while no bystanders were harmed in the incident. Orange Police Department later established that the driver, a resident of Rancho Santa Margarita, was not under the influence during the accident. However, he was detained for the possession of nitrous oxide and for contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

This marks the second occasion where the fountain at Plaza Park suffered damage due to speeding drivers. In a related incident, the fountain had also been damaged by a carjacking suspect in 2023 who was being pursued by law enforcement.

710 Freeway Closed Following Big Rig Crash and Fuel Spill

A chain of events which began with a big rig crash involving two semi-trucks led to the temporary closure of the 710 Freeway in California early Tuesday morning. These events unfolded north of the Alondra Boulevard exit in Compton, as reported by the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

The CHP received information on the incident around 12:20 am, according to preliminary reports. KTLAs obtained video footage from the scene further clarified that there was significant damage sustained by a semi-truck, leading to fuel leakage.

In addition to the damaged truck, there was another big rig implicated in the crash. The second truck had been transporting a shipping container which overturned as a result of the accident. Despite receiving only minor front-end damages, the event led to a substantial fuel spill which subsequently shut down the freeway.

The restoration process of the freeway was prolonged due to debris that had resulted from the spillage from the second semi-truck involved. The CHP confirmed all the southbound lanes of the 710 in the area affected by the spillage to be closed until the freeway was sufficiently cleared. By 5 a.m., all lanes in the freeway had been reopened and operations had returned to normal.

The cause of the crash still remains under investigation by the authorities, however, there were no reports of any injuries associated with the incident.

California Proposes New Rebate Helping on Electric Vehicle Purchases

Californias government, under the leadership of Governor Newsom, has indicated that it could potentially offer rebates to residents who purchase electric vehicles, in the event that the incoming Trump administration decides to do away with a related federal tax credit. The proposal was officially issued on Monday.

Newsoms suggestion involves creating a new iteration of a prior program which had, during its implementation, funded purchases of over 594,000 vehicles. This had resulted in saving residents in excess of 456 million gallons of fuel. Having served its purpose, the program was retired in 2023.

According to Governor Newsom, the capital to run the proposed rebate program could potentially be sourced from the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund. This fund is primarily maintained by the contributions from polluters as part of the states cap-and-trade program. At this stage, no specifics regarding the cost of the program or the working of the rebate system have been shared.

Newsom is schedule to provide further details on the proposed program during his planned appearance in Kern County.

As of this point, California has reported sales of over two million zero-emission vehicles. Its worth noting that during his campaign period, President-elect Donald Trump had promised tax credits worth $7,500 for new EVs and $4,000 for pre-owned ones. However, following Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musks support and advisory involvement, the President-elect seems to have shifted his stance slightly. The original credits had been established as part of the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act, signed by President Joe Biden.

Addressing the potential elimination of the federal tax credit by the Trump Administration, Newsom stated Californias position. He reiterated the states commitment towards a cleaner, pollution-free transportation future by making electric vehicles more accessible.

California Governor Proposes State EV Rebates if Federal Tax Credit is Eliminated

In response to speculations of federal tax credits for electric vehicle (EV) purchases being eliminated by the incoming Trump administration, California Governor has announced the possibility of a state-based rebate system.

The proposal issued on Monday taps into the previously successful approach of a rebate system, which helped fund over 594,000 vehicles, saving California residents more than 456 million gallons of fuel. However, the original program was phased out in 2023.

The proposition for a new rebate system would potentially be funded by the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, a fund contributed to by polluters under the states cap-and-trade program. Governor Newsom, however, did not provide any details about the cost of the program or how the rebate system would function.

According to data, over 2 million zero-emission vehicles have already been sold in the Golden State. During his campaign, President-elect Donald Trump had proposed a $7,500 credit for new EV purchases and $4,000 for used EVs, a stance he later softened after Tesla CEO Elon Musk showed support.

These credits were introduced as part of the Inflation Reduction Act signed by President Joe Biden in 2022. Governor Newsom pointed out that if the federal tax credit decision is overturned by the Trump administration, California would intervene with a state-level solution cumulating its commitment to clean air and green jobs.

State authorities are expected to release more information about the proposed program soon.

Two Hospitalized After Vehicle Plunges into Harbor in Marina Del Rey

On Sunday evening, a vehicle with two occupants plunged into the harbor in Marina Del Rey, resulting in both individuals being taken to the hospital for medical attention. The incident took place at 4675 Admiralty Way, following which authorities from the Los Angeles County Fire Department were alerted and arrived at the scene post 6 p.m.

Public Information Officer Marco Rodriguez from L.A. County Fire Department reported that the two individuals were able to escape the submerged vehicle independently. They were examined by the departments medical staff at the scene, and subsequently transported to a nearby hospital. Their condition remains undisclosed at this time.

In the immediate aftermath of the incident, two lifeguards associated with L.A. County were deployed as divers to ascertain that no other individuals were trapped inside the vehicle. Concurrently, recovery crews from the L.A. County Fire Department undertook the operation of pulling the vehicle out of the harbor. This was performed by affixing large yellow floating devices to the vehicle, which was then anchored to a crane. The vehicle was eventually hoisted out of the water and loaded onto a tow truck.

Witness accounts suggest the possible presence of a third individual, a female, who allegedly exited the vehicle before it descended into the water. Official confirmation of this detail is, however, pending. The extracted vehicle bore significant front-end damage, likely from its collision with the steel railing before entering the water. The circumstances leading to the accident are currently under investigation, and further details remain to be disclosed.
