Two High School Students Injured in E-Bike Collision in Orange County

Two high school students from Orange County suffered severe injuries in an e-bike incident on Tuesday. The students, who remain unidentified, attend Brea Canyon High School. The collision took place on the State College Boulevard sidewalk near Avocado Street around 2:15 p.m.

According to the Brea Police Department, the e-bikes handlebar clipped a tree, launching the students into a brick wall. It was determined that neither student wore a helmet, leading to speculation of high-speed travel at the time of collision. On-site help from Good Samaritans provided the primary source of immediate medical assistance before law enforcement officers arrived.

“Both riders faced extensive injuries, with one suffering potentially life-threatening trauma. Both victims underwent immediate transportation to a nearby trauma center for emergency care,” stated the police. The specific nature of their injuries remains undisclosed.

The students and their families have been offered support services by the Brea Olinda Unified School District during this recovery period. Brea law enforcement also extended solidarity to the victims family and friends. Additionally, they acknowledged the passers-by who halted to assist the injured riders.

The incident emphasizes the risks associated with e-bike accidents and the necessity of safe-riding practices. These practices should include use of designated riding zones and helmet utilization. Coincidentally, Brea city recently implemented a regulation banning e-bike sidewalk usage, reckless riding, and transporting passengers on single-rider e-bikes.

Three Fatalities and an Arrest in Two-Vehicle Collision in the City of Industry

A serious two-vehicle collision resulted in three fatalities in the City of Industry, as reported by California Highway Patrol (CHP) authorities. The incident occurred late Tuesday night, on January 14, 2025, specifically at the crossroads of Temple and Azusa avenues around 10:45 p.m.

The collision involved a gray Jeep and an unidentified black vehicle. Based on the CHP report, the gray Jeep t-boned the black vehicle which triggered both vehicles to tally roll over. The substantial effect of the crash was evident at the scene with KTLA video footage revealing severely damaged vehicles. While the Jeep exhibited substantial damage but retained its recognizable form, the black vehicle was completely mangled beyond recognition.

According to the specifics provided by CHP representatives, two of the fatalities were passengers in the black vehicle. The third casualty was rushed to a hospital but later succumbed to their injuries. However, the official report could not immediately corroborate which vehicle this third victim occupied at the time of the collision.

Authorities confirmed the driver of the Jeep had been apprehended following the crash. Whether the Jeep driver was impaired at the time of the crash and subjected to DUI charges remains unclear as the CHP spokesperson could not readily confirm this aspect of the case. Abandoned Vehicles Hampering Firefighting Efforts near Palisades Fire in Los Angeles

In Los Angeles, drivers abandoning their vehicles in the midst of the infamous traffic jams near the Palisades Fire are causing substantial challenges for emergency response personnel. An appeal was made to the public, advising them to leave keys in the car if they choose to abandon it, enabling firefighters to potentially clear obstructive vehicles from gridlocked roads.

Unfortunately, there have been instances where drivers did not adhere to these instructions, culminating in officials deploying bulldozers to move stopped cars to the sides of the road. This course of action is undertaken to carve a path for emergency vehicles on Palisades Drive, rendering it possible for fire trucks to reach the affected areas.

While this tactic might cause damage to the vehicles, it is a necessary measure in emergency situations for clearing the way for firefighting and other emergency response vehicles. Screeching noises emanating from the displaced vehicles confirm the possibility of damage. However, officials insist that in such severe circumstances, prioritizing the clearance of hindering vehicles on crisis location routes is essential, even at the cost of some vehicular damage.

Robbery Suspect Arrested After Attempted Getaway in Autonomous Vehicle

A robbery suspect who targeted a Fairfax District grocery store was arrested after attempting to flee the scene in an autonomous vehicle, according to reports confirmed by Los Angeles Police Department to KTLA. The incident reportedly occurred near 8:30 p.m. at a Ralphs grocery store at the intersection of West 3rd Street and La Brea Avenue.

Marred by limited details, the current understanding is that the suspect stole an undisclosed amount of merchandise from the store. The individual then encountered a security guard, leading to an altercation before escape was attempted using a Waymo driverless vehicle. Unverified reports suggest that the individual resorted to the use of pepper spray to avoid capture by the stores security guard. This minor detail, however, is yet to be confirmed by the police.

Police officers were informed post incident that the suspected criminal had fled the scene in a Waymo vehicle. In due course, the authorities managed to locate the autonomous vehicle and subsequently apprehend the suspect. KTLA obtained traffic stop footage, revealing that at least four patrol vehicles had trailed behind the suspect before the autonomous vehicle came to a halt three miles from the scene at the intersection of South Wilton Place and Country Club Drive in Arlington Heights.

After the vehicle stopped, police officers surrounded it, guns drawn, and ordered the suspect to surrender. The individual was quickly placed in custody and transported in a police car. As a part of its operational protocol, Waymo software is programmed to recognize and respond appropriately to law enforcement signals, including sirens and flashing lights. Additionally, if a Waymo journey is interrupted due to law enforcement interaction, the Support team is notified and communicates with the passengers and law enforcement officials to resolve the matter.
