On Sunday, two California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers were involved in a vehicular accident while responding to a separate two-vehicle collision in Pomona. Officials conveyed the events of the incident which took place on the southbound stretch of the 71 Freeway near Rio Rancho Road, around 2:50 a.m.
The CHP officers were handling the initial collision when another vehicle struck their patrol car, as confirmed by a CHP spokesperson. The two responding officers sustained injuries from the secondary collision and were transported to a local hospital. The extent of their injuries and current status have not been disclosed.
Its yet undetermined whether the motorist who collided with the patrol car suffered any injuries. As of now, the cause of both collisions remains unclear and under investigation.
In the aftermath of the crash, all southbound lanes on the freeway were temporarily closed. Reporting authorities issued a SigAlert, an alert typically issued in California for substantial traffic disruptions, for the affected stretch of freeway for an undetermined duration. By 7:20 a.m., the SigAlert had been cancelled, signifying the reopening of the lanes. Further details on the incident will be reported as the investigation unfolds.
