A fatal accident occurred on the 405 Freeway in the Sherman Oaks area on Tuesday morning. A vehicle was spotted traveling on the wrong side of the freeway, heading northbound on the southbound lanes. This report was confirmed by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) shortly after 4 a.m. The wrong-way driver was involved in a collision with three to four other vehicles near Valley Vista Boulevard, blocking several lanes of the freeway.
As a result of this accident, one person was confirmed dead, and at least one more person was transported to a nearby hospital in an unknown condition. Information regarding the identities of the victims and the vehicles they were traveling in has not been released.
In response to the crash, a SigAlert was issued before 4:30 a.m. for the closure of all southbound lanes. Later in the morning, around 9:30 a.m., the three left lanes of the freeway remained closed, although there was some traffic movement in the three right lanes. All lanes were reopened a short time later following clearance from the CHP officers on the scene.
The SigAlert, which denotes unplanned road closures, issued for the incident has been cancelled in Sherman Oaks as of 9:41 a.m. Truck and heavy vehicle operators had been advised to seek alternate routes until the SigAlert was cancelled and the freeway was reopened. This report represents the latest information available from the CHP dispatch and other local news sources.
