An accident involving multiple vehicles on the eastbound 10 Freeway resulted in the death of one individual and left two others requiring hospital care. The collision occurred west of the Whitewater Rest Area in Riverside County on a recent Friday at approximately 2:40 a.m., according to a response by the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
A 25-year-old male from Palm Springs was driving a Volkswagen Jetta in the wrong direction on the freeway when he collided head-on with an incoming GMC Envoy SUV. As a result of the collision, the SUV was forced into the center median while the Jetta was deflected into the path of a Toyota C-HR.
The Jettas driver did not survive the impact. Two other drivers involved in the collision, a 49-year-old Los Angeles man driving the SUV and a 22-year-old woman from La Quinta driving the Toyota, suffered significant and moderate injuries respectively. Both victims were transported to a nearby hospital for necessary medical treatment.
The details leading to the collision are currently under investigation by the CHP. It remains unclear whether alcohol or drugs were contributing factors to the incident.
