An unidentified hit-and-run driver caused a fatal accident in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles, after crashing into an apartment building, the California Highway Patrol reports. The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the Park Western Apartments situated at Western and Russell avenues intersection.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson, the driver, heading southbound on Western Ave, attempted a left turn but lost control and crashed into the apartment building. Subsequent investigation and video feed showed the vehicle crashed through a wall into one of the apartment units.
The Los Angeles Fire Department stated that a middle-aged man, around 50 years old, and a 9-year-old boy were trapped under the vehicle and required extrication. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, whereas the boy was transferred to a local hospital in serious condition. A 34-year-old woman, also a victim of the crash, was hospitalized with minor injuries.
The perpetrator of the accident reportedly fled the scene on foot and is currently being sought by the police. As of now, there has been no description of the suspect.
Following the incident, the Red Cross was alerted to assist seven displaced people from the crash site while the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety determines the buildings habitability status.
