The holiday season turned tragic for a California state senator as his grandchild was killed in a car crash. The incident happened near California State Route 18 in Apple Valley on the night before Christmas Eve.

Alex Robles, the 30-year-old grandchild of Sen. Bob Archuleta (D-Pico Rivera), was the person killed in the incident. According to a press release from Sen. Archuletas office, Robles was struck by a driver suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The impact of the crash led to Robles immediate death.

The suspected DUI driver, whose identity has not been revealed, reportedly walked away without injuries. Officers from the San Bernardino County Sheriffs Department arrived at the scene and proceeded to arrest the individual involved.

Upon learning about the incident, Sen. Archuleta and his wife went to Victorville to be with their eldest daughter Sandra and the rest of the family amidst their grief. The lawmaker remembered Alex as a lovely and wonderful person who was about to embark on a career path Alex had dreamed about since a young age.

Sen. Archuleta used this tragic incident to remind the public about the hazards of driving under the influence, particularly during the festive period. He emphasized that such incidents could happen to anyone, anytime and lead to tragic losses. Sen. Archuleta has been representing an area that includes parts of Los Angeles and Orange counties since his election in 2018.
