A fatal collision in South Los Angeles has resulted in the temporary closure of all lanes of the 110 Freeway. The accident, which occurred Saturday night on the northbound side of the 110 between Manchester Avenue and Century Boulevard, involved a fuel tanker and two other vehicles. The tanker overturned in the collision, causing approximately 100 gallons of jet fuel to spill onto the roadway. Footage obtained by KTLA revealed the tanker resting atop a black sedan, with fuel visibly leaking from the truck.
Unnamed eyewitnesses at the scene of the accident reported seeing the tanker abruptly veer left, although the exact cause of the collision remains unknown. One eyewitness commented that it appeared the truck driver was responsible for the accident yet could not confirm whether the truck had been hit prior to its erratic movement.
The incident resulted in one fatality and two injuries. The person killed in the accident was driving the sedan beneath the overturned truck and was pronounced dead at the scene. The injured parties, a 30-year-old woman and a 45-year-old man, suffered minor injuries. Witnesses reported that the truck driver survived and was transported to a hospital by another individual, but fire officials have not confirmed these accounts.
Efforts by LAFD and other response teams to manage the fuel leak have been challenging. Hours after the accident, the main leak was reportedly contained, yet smaller leaks continued to present a potential fire hazard. The 110 Freeway remained closed between Manchester Avenue and Century Boulevard, with both lanes reopening Sunday morning at 7 am. The connector ramps to the 105 Freeway were also closed as a result of the collision.
Efforts to clear the scene are ongoing. The process involves removing the remaining fuel from the overturned truck before it can be turned right-side-up and removed by a private company. The California Highway Patrol has initiated an investigation into the cause of the accident.
