A fatal multi-vehicle accident occurred on the 405 Freeway in Carson on Monday night, leading to one death and leaving another person in critical condition. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded to a call at 9:53 p.m. regarding a possible wrong-way driver that resulted in a collision involving four to five vehicles in the southbound lanes near Avalon Boulevard.
Los Angeles County Fire crews confirmed the fatality at the scene and transported the critically injured patient. The identities of the victims have not yet been disclosed. Additional injuries were reported; however, the severity of those injuries remains unclear. The CHP issued a full freeway closure on the southbound 405 at 10:30 p.m. as the crash was under investigation.
Speculation is that a wrong-way driver may have caused the tragic accident, which will be confirmed as the investigation progresses. During the crisis, traffic was diverted off the freeway at Avalon Boulevard, and drivers were advised to use alternative routes. The lanes, initially having no estimated reopening time, had traffic backed up for miles.
Acknowledging the traffic bottleneck, Sky5 reported that the congestion extended for miles at 10:30 p.m. The incident concluded with an announcement from CHP at 4 a.m. on Tuesday, stating that the SigAlert had ended, and all lanes were open again.
